Ford Focus SVT
The SVT Focus features 170hp (40 more than the standard Zetec engine), 6-speed Getrag transaxle, 17 inch wheels and tires, sport suspension, and large (for it's class) four-wheel disc brakes. This car represents what many believe is the "best enthusiast Focus" that Ford has offered to date in the US market.
How did Ford and SVT get the additional 40 horsepower over the standard Zetec engine? The SVT Focus used an improved airbox with an additional inlet and a larger tube feeding the airbox, a larger throttle body, a dual stage intake manifold that switched from the long runners for low-RPM torque production to the short runners for high RPM operation. Raised intake ports in the cylinder head, variable valve timing on the intake camshaft, aggressive camshaft profiles, and a high-flow, 4-2-1 tubular header with a relocated, high flow catalytic converter all contributed to the additional horsepower. This engine makes it’s peak horsepower at 7,000 RPM! Other features of the SVT Focus that helped produce more horsepower are 2.25 inch exhaust system and a improved ECU.
The SVT Focus is similar to the standard Focus, with the above mentioned features being the biggest differences. The SVT Ford Focus was offered from 2002-2004. In 2003 and 2004 model years, the SVT Focus was offered in both a 3 door and 5 door hatchback.
In 2003, the 3 door SVT Focus offered the European Appearance Package as an option. This EAP was made up of dark charcoal colored, wheels, full leather Recaro seats, and all other SVT options such as HID headlamps, Audiophile stereo system with subwoofer, sunroof, and Cold Weather Package. In addition to the SVT specific colors, the EAP SVT Focus could be ordered in either Competition Orange or Screamin Yellow. In 2004, the EAP was offered on the 5 door SVT Focus as well.
So how do you make a performance model like the SVT Focus a better performing car? Most enthusiasts start with a Cold Air Intake, like a K&N Typhoon or a AEM. A larger throttle body will improve throttle response. Many drivers feel the SVT is a little lazy off the line and the 65mm FC style throttle body helps to alleviate this situation. A SCT Strategy Flasher will improve the programming within the factory ECU. It also gives the user the ability to modify certain individual parameters. The SCT Strategy Flasher also works like a scan tool to determine MIL codes.
On the exhaust side of things, an Off-Road pipe is available for those racing their SVT Focus. This coupled with the 2.50inch Borla SVT Focus cataback system are very popular. The stock 6-speed shifter is a pretty sweet piece, but Steeda makes a short throw shifter that is the favorite of the SVT Focus crowd. To control all this new-found power, the VF Engineering Rear lower motor mount eliminates that nasty thump in the floor on a hard 1-2 shift!
